FIGHTING
FOR GIRLS'
RIGHTS

THE JUSTICE TEAM

Every girl has the right to a life of dignity, protected from sexual exploitation and all forms of violence. But that isn’t a right that’s guaranteed for the girls of the BR-116.

The authorities that are meant to defend and protect them are shown themselves to be ineffective, with cases shelved or forgotten and aggressors often protected by their wealth or power.

That is why Meninadança’s Justice Team exists. We provide legal support to girls who otherwise have no other recourse, showing society they have the same rights as anyone else by pursuing abusers and exploiters though the courts.

HOW OUR JUSTICE TEAM IS EMPOWERING GIRLS AND BRINGING CHANGE

PROSECUTING ABUSERS & EXPLOITERS

After girls at our Pink Houses open up about abuse or exploitation our lawyers pursue offenders through the courts.

Because violent crimes against children have to be prosecuted by the state, we often act as the ‘prosecutor’s assistant’ during trials, helping interrogate the accused and collecting evidence.

SUPPORTING & EMPOWERING GIRLS & THEIR FAMILIES

The Justice Team regularly visits the Pink Houses, holding group sessions and conversation circles to talk with the girls about issues relating to justice, and to educate them about their rights.

They also have one-to-one meetings with girls who require legal support, and are always available to any girl who wants to talk or who need advice or help.

HOLDING TO ACCOUNT AUTHORITIES

Our lawyers have regular meetings with the local protection networks in the towns where we work, to discuss a girl’s case and find solutions or to influence local public policies.

We have also used the law to force local authorities to fulfil their legal obligations towards vulnerable girls in the towns where we work.

EDUCATING COMMUNITIES

Our lawyers also work alongside the Pink Houses to help the girls’ communities understand their rights and responsibilities.

As part of our Changing Minds programme, we often hold public meetings to challenge intrenched attitudes about abuse and exploitation, encouraging local people to see girls differently.

“Meninadanca changed my life because they taught me to trust in myself, to fight and overcome my traumas, they taught me resilience, they showed me the right path, and above everything they believed in me when no-one else did.”
